Frank 8/10

Honestly didn't expect much out of this from the appearance. Thought it was going to be one of those indie films where whimsy is supposed to evoke some kind of emotion.

Frank is a good movie about music. Its a good movie about mental illness.

I found a lot to like about this movie, but not much to say.

The French Connection 10/10

Honestly don't hear people talk about this enough when it comes to crime thrillers from the 70s. I really like how this movie portrays law enforcement. Doyle is dedicated, but he's also sloppy. Their are so many times where he is close to solving the thing and everything slips through his fingers.

The scene where I realized I love this movie is this one car chase. I can't remember a movie right now besides this where the protagonist is being so careless that he crashes his car several times during a chase. It felt so intense. You could almost feel his frustration. It reminded me of when you crash your car during a chase in GTA.

John Wick: 10/10

EXACTLY what it set out to be, and THEN SOME.

Lots of cheese in the writing, but interspaced with some really REALLY good character development and some of the finest comic-book levels of badassery I have seen on the big screen EVER. and all delivered by some top-quality actors, who really do revel in the stupidity of it all. Keanu is a fucking dream, man.

And while I had no right to be anything more than a damn good action flick at best, it also pulled some of the finest examples of show-don't-tell storytelling and worldbuilding straight out of it's ass. Complex concepts for the huge mob-run world Wick is set in are given piece throughout the movie, to the point where you never feel swamped with information, because at no point does anyone sit down and give you a lecture about 'how shit works around here'.

And the action sequences. Oh my fucking god the action sequences. I honestly haven't seen anything on par with the level of seer AWESOME that was demonstrated in this movie. it's got your CQC deathmacthes, it's got gun and knife wrestling, it's got combat rolls, executions, quickdraw, and oh my good gravy. They really have to be seen to be believed. A good portion of the movie is dedicated to just John's relationship with his dog and his backstory being built up, but by the time the first major action sequence starts you are ready to be convinced that this man is a god. And it works.

You love action movies? Watch it. Interested in really good storytelling? Gotcha covered here. Sexy old men? We got Keanu and even Willem Dafoe turns up if that's your thing.

Watch this movie.

Murdoch Mysteries - 8/10

Neat little mystery-slash-police-drama about a detective in Victorian-era Toronto who uses these newfangled "forensics" to solve crimes. One of those shows that reminds me that Canadian television can actually be good, though all of the nudge-nudge historical jokes can be a bit tiresome after a while.

Loved this film. The comedy aspects alone make this a great movie. The action and fighting scenes even more so. Can't wait for the next movie.

To be fair, it was like the first avengers in that it's a really good comedy movie.

Mad Max: Fury Road: 10000000/10

OH WHAT A DAY

WHAT A LOVELY DAY

But seriously, this movie is an absolute masterpiece. Not a fault on it's face. Nothing that's become apparent in the 5 hours since I've watched it. So so very very good. One huge top-notch action sequence from start to finish. Ad it's damn clever too. The action sequences do clever stuff, the plot delves deep into the society and uses it to make it's views very clear. And ebsolutely everyone puts on a stellar performance. Charlise Theron as Furiosa was the star of the show. Hardy is brilliant as Max, but he's there being swept up and used in Furiosa's story. Theron rocks the action sequences, the drama, the everything essentially.

Seriously, this is without a doubt going to appear on people's 'best movies of all time lists'. Remain sceptical of the hype, but watch it. Watch it right now.

Meanwhile, worth noting that Hardy seems to slip back into his Bane voice in a few points. Not complaining. Not like me and my mates didn't make Dark Knight jokes at every available opportunity.

He's crashing this truck, with no survivors.

Boyhood - 10/10

I don't know what to say about this movie that won't send me into a long rant about every thing I loved.

Basically, just watch it. Especially if you were born around the mid-90s.
