Philo, For clip-on microphones under $40 usually they're of roughly the same recording quality (that is, okay but not particularly great), so actually getting a cheap one isn't a bad idea. I do have the Zalman high-sensitivity mic which costs less than 10 bucks, solid SQ though it's always-on so you need to use it purely as a push-to-talk:

This Sony omnidirectional mic is a more premium device, and it records via stereo and not mono. Thus, it is suitable for proper voice recording and similar applications. From the looks of it though, there's no integrated button and thus is another PTT microphone.
