Stumbled over some anime recently.

K-on! first season.

3/10

Its about four girls in high school who are in a band. But in reality all they do is drink tea and play around. It was funny at first but the characters eventually get too boring and predictable for my liking. There is almost no character development which gets pretty tame in such a character driven show, and the same jokes/gags are repeated way too much (mio being scared of everything and the female teacher sexually harresing the kids.)

Lucky Star

8/10
A bit slow at first but the show is really funny and easy to relate to. Pretty similar to k-on but actually fun. The lead characters are all hilarious in their own way and supplement each other very well. With the exception of Miyuki and Yutaka who are a bit boring and only there to be cute. Also the ending of each episode (lucky channel) is very uncoventional but hilarious as well.

Its very very rare that i you ever see a show with so many memorable characters.

Big Hero 6

7/10
Very cute and standard disney movie. Maybe a bit too safe. Feels like a "the incredibles lite" which is definately not a bad thing. The friends of the main character are a bit anonymous though and never really get explored fully.

Hunger games 3
6/10
Dull, repetitive and boring. Complete filler episode with almost no progression of the main story arc. Only reason its still good is because of Jennifer Lawrence always being entertaining to watch.

Anohana - The Flower that we saw that day

7/10
Very well written show about having a falling out with old friends and putting your life back on track. As well as dealing with the loss of your loved ones. Every character is actually not very like-able as persons, but very easy to relate to still which is somewhat odd for anime standards. Thus the characters come off very realistic which makes the sad parts hit closer to home.

A big minus for the show is the co-lead character "menma" which the story revolves around being much weaker than the rest of the cast, since her character has no progression whatsoever. But overall its a great show.

Haiyore nuarko san W 5/10
An ecchi lowecraft themed (slight harem) anime with action-adventure elements. The interactions between the two lead characters are great and both leads are good characters. I'ts a shame the rest of the cast comes off as so one dimensional as they do though. I feel like this would have been a much better show if they would have focused much more on the relationship between the two leads. So overall this comes off as a missed opportunity more than anything.

Unbroken 8/10

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I hadn't heard anything about it before being dragged to see it with my family. It's a true story about an American bombardier who was in a Japanese POW camp. It was really well done and I'm not ashamed to admit i actually got a little emotional at a scene in the end during the "what happened to them later" bit

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (2014) - 9/10

A loving send-up of various shoujo and slice-of-life tropes. It parodies and undermines genre conventions while still remaining sincere and heartfelt. It doesn't aim to unmask the genre(s) as stupid, but rather to make you aware of and laugh at some of their more absurd conventions as as fan. The characters are extremely strong, and this is possibly the funniest anime I've seen since I watched Azumanga Daioh or Nichijou. Keeping it to 12 episodes was also smart move, as the series never really drags, and there is no need for episodes that scramble to tie literally everything together; it just sort of ends, and the characters' lives go on without us. One of my favorite anime to come out of 2014.

Sakura Trick: Episode 1 (2014) - N/A

I gave no rating since I have only seen the first episode so far, I'll return with a rating once I have finished. From the first episode it doesn't seem to be shaping up to be amazing, but I was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting mediocre art and bland writing just as an excuse for yuri, but the art was way better than I anticipated, the characters, while not (yet) coming off as extremely deep and memorable, are not total cardboard cutouts, and I did legitimately find some of the comedy funny. Of course, there are a lot of very forced elements ("what if someone finds out?" "special friend," lots of boob shots) but they are not overwhelming or omnipresent. I was also pleasantly surprised by a relative lack of "but we're both girls!!!111one" rhetoric.

Even if this ends up falling into the "pretty good" rather than "very good" or "great" slot, I will be happy with that, because it means that there is room in the anime world for a mainstream shoujo-style same-sex love story that is actually competently - not masterfully, but competently - written and animated. And more may come in the future.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit - 7/10

Still a very enjoyable movie despite being almost 30 years old. The characters are likeable, the animation melding with the live action characters is very believable, and the humor is outrageous. I missed a lot of the jokes when I first watched this as a kid. But I'm just floored by all the innuendos they managed to get in there.

Back to the Future Part II - 6/10

Arguably the weakest of the trilogy but still an enjoyable movie nonetheless. Alternate universes in films make for interesting scenes and plot points. Characters and story still very memorable and engaging. Still waiting on my Nike shoes though later this year.

Up - 9/10

Definitely one of the better Pixar films. Lots of emotion within the first 10 minutes alone. Some amazing scenery and visuals round out a hear-filled story with plenty of humor to boot.

Back to the Future Part III - 8/10

A satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. I prefer the old west setting as opposed to the future in Part II. The only real weakness I see is the running jokes from the previous two films kind of wears on you after awhile. Some people may find them humorous however.

I have honestly always liked Part III the least. Doc's romance is pretty cute and I love the old west setting, but I dunno.

When The Wind Blows (1986) - 8/10

A rather hidden gem that I regret not having seen sooner. This movie moved me in a way I wasn't expecting. The contrast between the beautifully cartooney style of the animation and the severity of the subject matter make this movie carry a heavy emotional payload.

I know that 2015 is a cool year but the 80s effects have not aged particularly well. I felt that Part III was a satisfying conclusion to the series.

The Interview - 7/10

I enjoyed this more than I expected. This looked like a very mediocre film, but was actually pretty funny. It's the trademark Seth Rogen/James Franco film so it's not like there's anything new here, but it's funny. Worth a watch, I guess.

I got exactly what I expected from this movie: Adam Sandler. It gets to be as high as a 3 because of this:

John Wick - 10/10

I know I already reviewed this, but I watched it again and fuck it, it deserves that extra half a point that I withheld from it. This movie is just about perfect.

Guardians of the Galaxy - 9/10

In someways, a lot better than Marvel's other films. Even though I had little knowledge of the source material, the actors/actresses behind the characters made their roles more likable. Plus you don't have to be a comic aficionado to appreciate a good film. The environment is amazing, the writing superb, the story is classic, and everything else about it was dang near perfect. And it gave us the word "pelvic sorcery" mlp-psexy

I'm super stoked for the sequel.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman 6/10

I was pretty surprised by this movie. There were quite a few moments where I genuinely laughed. I wish all attempts to take an older existing cartoon like this and make a movie out of it turned out this good. I wouldn't say this is an incredible unmissable experience, but it sits far above recent attempts at renewing old franchises like the Smurfs and Alvin and the Chipmunks movies.

That being said the overarching plot here is pretty stupid. Mr. Peabody is apparently Sherman's adoptive father who is in danger of losing the right to care for him because of an incident at school. Its dumb but it lets them inject forgettable lessons about family into the movie. Really wish this wasn't part of the movie and it was more about the adventures in time.

Although it does bring up the set up for the line

Which might be the best adult joke I've heard in a kids movie in a while.

Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated - 9/10

This is my favorite version of Scooby Doo. Better than even the original 60s version. The characters are all flanderized just enough to the point where they feel more obviously like characters and can't be confused with real people, which I feel is a good thing in this case because it separates their personalities more and none of them are forgettable.

There's an overarching plot which forces the show to get serious in the last few episodes, which is probably the weakest point of the whole show, but it's still okay. I honestly found the serious parts even more hilarious, but unintentionally.

Fred is my spirit animal.

Marge Gunderson is one of my favorite movie characters. Of course all the actors on this movie are great (with a special mention to Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare), but I've rarely seen an actor breathing life into the character he portrays the way Frances McDormand does in Fargo, it's really unique.

Robocop (2014) 7/10

Once again I was taken by complete surprise by a movie I expected to hate. I found the opening pretty weak. It was also hard to get settled into this movie, but once I got past the idea that this movie had to compete with its predecessor it was really enjoyable to me. Really Robocop 2014 does everything a reboot/remake should do. It wasn't about reconstructing the same story scene for scene. It was its own thing and was better for it.

Better than the original? No. I would say though that it is good for different reasons. Its made for a different audience. Its probably not what most fans of the original are looking for. And I can see how it would be extremely difficult to force yourself into the mindset that this movie can be different, but still good.

I expected action with confusing cinematography, but even a fight scene that takes place in extreme levels of darkness is easy to follow. And the story didn't feel like a backdrop for the action either. Murphy's whole struggle between his humanity and his robot software is maybe more interesting than it was in the original.

Still, I wonder if I could have liked this movie more. You can really feel that they were pulling some of their punches to get that PG-13. I mean Murphy, who is a cop living in Detroit, somehow decides to set his gun to stun instead of killing everyone with a weapon he sees? I don't buy it.

Inherent Vice -> 7.5 - 8/10

I honestly haven't come to a conclusive opinion on this movie just yet, but I can say that it's definitely one of the most interesting ones I've seen lately, although it would be too hasty to consider it one of Paul Thomas Anderson's best works. The story of this movie has been, for me at least, rather hard to follow because of how fragmented it is, which would make sense as we're following the story of a stoner PI, and the director seems to be molding the movie in a way to put the viewer in a state similar to the one Doc (the PI) is perpetually in. The very subtle cinematography and soundtrack create a very sober atmosphere in which humour and tension are really well communicated to the viewer, while giving the movie a really special tone and personality; the movie feels really melancholic rather than comical. The acting is superb, specially coming from Joaquin Phoenix and Josh Brolin who play as the Inspector Bigfoot which is one of my favorite characters of the movie.

Raising Arizona - 7/10

I did enjoy it, but I bet I'll enjoy it more when I become a father.

Also, the Huggies chase scene might possibly be the greatest sequence in cinematic history.

Guardians of the Galaxy - 9/10

Sometimes I love watching movies that are just good at what they set out to do. GotG hit just the spot by being a very fun space opera with a likable cast and it doesn't really have to do more to be pretty great.
