Visually colorful and just downright gorgeous. Story-wise, it was alright. Still definitely worth a watch though.

Guardians of the Galaxy: 8.9/10

Pretty damn great. The comedy factor is upped for this one compared to other Marvel based films. I'd say it's around 50% of the focus this time, with the remaining 50% filled with badass(and sometimes surprisingly smart) action, setpieces and wonderful intercharacter drama. It's not quite up to the levels of near perfection achieved by The Avengers and Winter Soldier, early on it spends a lot of time telling and not showing, something that should be avoided in moves, and in general it feels like it could have used a bit more running time. Not much, just time to get a better look at the distinct spaceship designs of different factions. There were times when factions arrived on the scene in respective spaceships and I had to wait for an explanation as to who they were, despite apparently being expected to recognise them. But I'm talking around 2 occasions, maybe 3. And that all adds up to minor irritants in a fantastic space opera in the vein of a Star Wars Meets Star Trec Meets Mass Effect. Definitely worth a watch.

After credits sequence:

Spoiler:

'From here I shall create a new world. A world where transport has not 2 wheels, nor 4, but 8 per luxury carriage. I shall cover the world from tip to tip with railroad tracks, their denizens roaming their land with coal-fuelled iron fists. There will be no gods. There will be no kings. There will only be TRAINS.'

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) - 9.5/10

I really, really, really liked this movie. I even liked it more than The Avengers, which may be a consequence of the fact that I am not usually a superhero person.

I give it such a high rating not because it's flawless -its flaws are many- but because the good points outweigh them, and oh are those good aspects so good. I particularly love how silly and escapist it was while still making the more serious emotional aspects have real impact. It avoided degeneration into

1. A cynical form of self-awareness that just throws wink-wink cliches at the audience for two hours and thinks that constitutes comedy

2. Blatant nostalgia exploitation

or

3. An artificial seriousness, which I can't take seriously, that attempts to add "weight" to the genre

all 3 being problems that all too often afflict the genre. Some of my friends complained of it being too "schizophrenic" in its shifts between seriousness and goofiness, but I actually thought that even though these shifts in tone could be quite dramatic, they were very organic and not forced at all. Indeed, the incorporation of both raucous laughter and tears is a hallmark of much of the best storytelling (just look at Shakespeare).

Other strong points included the art design, the main cast in both performance and writing (with the exception of Gamora, whom I felt was too much of a generic femme fatale and a bit lazily done in the film), and the length. Some reviewers I know have complained of it being over-long, but I think they just need better attention spans. If anything, I feel like too many action and adventure films are too short and it results in bad pacing. Usually, there is a long, organic setup, then the movie realizes it only has a half hour left or something and races to the finish. Guardians, by contrast, feels like it has a real beginning, middle, and end, and the pace felt extremely natural to me.

Also, Rocket is the best character. Other opinions are wrong.

Infernal Affairs - 8/10

A very well crafted police thriller with amazing performances and a very well sustained tension throughout. It's quite thoughtful too on its meditation on how a person (in this case, the two protagonists) can live a lie for as much time as the people around him consider being one kind of person that is false in reality.
The only slight gripes I have with this movie may be how a bit too confusingly sped up the introduction is and how (Hong-Kong fashioned) kitsch the music sounds at some moments in the movie (notably the romance stemming between Yan and his psychiatrist), but come to think of it, I think it's just part of the charm of the Hong-Kong action movies.

Guardians of the Galaxy-9.4/10

Very little is wrong with this movie. The actress who played Nebula was mediocre, while Ronan's actor was just awful. It also employs a few too many cheesy clichés for its own good. Other than that, I think they nailed everything.

Definitely one of Tarantino's better films IMO. I love all of these various genres he gets inspiration from. Even though when I first saw it over 10 years ago, I didn't get it too much. But I watch it now and see how great a movie it is.

Ronan was great as far as I was concerned. Yes it pulled a lot of tropes, mostly with Ronan's very existence being a very generic villain. He was hamming it up as much as he could and at least made him entertaining to watch.

And to pull another trope, 'tropes aren't bad'. You said it yourself, you enjoyed it a lot. Execution is everything and Guardians nailed it.

In light of the passing of Robin Williams, I went and watched one of his more critically acclaimed films. This is definitely one of his best and I plan on watching Good Will Hunting next.

Looked great visually, but left me unsatisfied story-wise. If you're a fan of the comic or of Robert Rodriguez's work, then I recommend it, but otherwise, you're better off just watching the original.

Alternately, just go to see the trailer for Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight. There isn't any movie footage, there's no confirmed cast, there's not even a freaking release date other than "2015", but damn if it wasn't the best part of the whole movie.

Harlock: Space Pirate - 8/10

This is a cg reboot of an anime from the 80s that I never watched. So I came into this with no context. I didn't know who the characters were or what the plot was. All I knew was the Woolie bought a $500 Harlock figure so it was probably at least worth checking out.

First off, this movie has some plot holes. Pretty glaring ones too. Personally, they didn't prevent me from enjoying it but you might feel different. There's also quite a bit of psuedoscience as they don't seem to know what Dark Matter really is. But again, I was willing to let that slide.

This is an extremely fun film and despite its flaws I had no problem enjoying myself. I would recommend this to anyone who loves a fun sci fi romp. The characters were likable and the theme resonated with me (something about how false hope isn't worth believing in. real hope is always better). Give it a shot.

The Wind Rises: 10/10

I wasn't expecting to care for this. I mean, I expected it to be great, it's Studio Ghibli, any lower expectations would be wrong to me, but it just isn't my type of movie. For those that don't know, it's the true story of Jiro, a Japanese engineer during the first and second World Wars, heavily fictionalised in places but covering him as a young boy to the end of the second World War.

I cared for it. Damn, it enthralled me. It's a well chosen tale, though I don't know exactly where creative liberties were taken. I do truly have to agree with my Dad with what he said at the end, on the verge of tears:

"THAT's how you make a movie."

I REALLY recommend you watch this if you have any interest in Studio Ghibli or inspirational tales of great people following dreams.

'From here I shall create a new world. A world where transport has not 2 wheels, nor 4, but 8 per luxury carriage. I shall cover the world from tip to tip with railroad tracks, their denizens roaming their land with coal-fuelled iron fists. There will be no gods. There will be no kings.
